State Veterans’ Homes address a unique need of care not traditionally covered
State veterans’ homes provide hospital, nursing home, and domiciliary care to needy, disabled veterans. The three levels of care range from skilled nursing, domiciliary care, and adult day healthcare. The most common service provided is for individuals who are not acutely ill and not in need of hospital care but require nursing care and related services. The Veterans Administration helps States to defray the costs of building and operating the homes through construction grants and per diem payments. While States need additional revenues to offset increases in operating costs, alternatives include payments from veterans receiving VA pensions.
